Port of Redwood City Honored with AAPA Lighthouse Award for Innovative Community Outreach

The Port of Redwood City is proud to announce that its Lunch & Learn Program Series has received the maritime industry’s coveted Lighthouse Award for Excellence in Community and Educational Outreach from the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA). This recognition underscores the Port’s innovative efforts to educate civic leaders and cultivate collaboration around the regional importance of maritime operations.

The award was presented during the 2024 AAPA Annual Convention & Exposition, where Port of Redwood City Executive Director Kristine Zortman accepted the award on behalf of the Port.

“This award is a testament to the power of partnership and the importance of education,” said Zortman. “The program not only educates civic leaders about the vital role our Port plays in the economy and environment but also builds a stronger network of ambassadors who champion maritime initiatives that benefit the entire region.”

Program highlights include:

  • Education: Providing civic leaders with a deeper understanding of the Port’s role in driving economic growth and environmental stewardship.

  • Networking: Creating opportunities for civic and maritime leaders to connect and collaborate.

  • Advocacy: Expanding the Port’s ambassador network to support initiatives and legislation critical to maritime success.

As a result of the program, the Port has strengthened its ability to secure critical support for grants and initiatives, culminating in letters of endorsement for a recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant application.

Launched in fall 2023 through a collaboration with the Seaport Industrial Association (SIA) and Graniterock, the Lunch & Learn Program Series offers civic leaders an immersive experience aboard a research vessel. The program includes presentations from maritime experts; networking opportunities with stakeholders; and insights into the Port’s operations, economic contributions, and sustainability initiatives.

The Lunch & Learn Program Series will return in 2025.
