The Port of Redwood City secures $1.9 million EPA grant furthering decarbonization efforts

The Port of Redwood City was awarded a $1.9 million Climate and Air Quality Planning Grant by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA). As part of the EPA’s Clean Ports Program, the funding will advance Port and local tenant operations through 2050 by improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions. This grant furthers the Port’s sustainability strategy by funding alternative fueling initiatives, including hydrogen-based fueling alternatives and infrastructure upgrades.

“Diversifying our fueling options and continuing to decarbonize are necessary for sustainable maritime operations,” shared Port of Redwood City Executive Director Kristine Zortman. “This investment from the EPA opens the door to many long-range benefits to the broader  Silicon Valley region, including emissions reduction and workforce development in energy production.”

This project will be collaborative, utilizing a comprehensive public participation engagement plan and a strategy for workforce development.

The EPA Clean Ports Program funds zero emission equipment, infrastructure and climate and air quality planning for ports nationwide. The program also supports reducing public health and environmental impacts in communities near ports.
