The Port of Redwood City strengthens stormwater infrastructure with $700,000 federal grant

The Port of Redwood City received $700,000 in Community Project Funding from U.S. Congressman Kevin Mullin appropriated for stormwater infrastructure improvements further reducing contaminants from entering the San Francisco Bay during storms.

These infrastructure enhancements are vital for the Port as it faces the challenges of rising sea levels, increased king tides and storm-related flooding.

Maintaining the integrity of the Port’s infrastructure is crucial to the region beyond the Port’s standard operation and services. As a designated Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Federal Staging Area, these upgrades will strengthen emergency preparedness initiatives.

“This investment reduces our impacts to the Bay while strengthening our environmental stewardship,” said Port of Redwood City Executive Director Kristine Zortman. “We are committed to safeguarding a healthy, sustainable waterfront that serves both our community and environment for generations to come.”

The stormwater infrastructure funding is a portion of a $14 million bipartisan federal government funding package that responds directly to some of the most pressing needs in the community, including transportation improvements, increasing affordable childcare spaces and expanding recreational opportunities across the region.

Mullin emphasized that his primary goal is to invest in his congressional district, and he expressed confidence that the projects earmarked in the funding package will have a direct and meaningful impact on the community.
